Not Placed? Worried? Make a Career as Probationary Officer(PO) in a PSB

Hey there Audience!
This post is for all those Engineering Graduates who unfortunately couldn’t make it to the placement list of their respective colleges, who couldn’t make their presence count during the placement sessions, those who didnt get any opportunity to do so and for those who have got a job but are not satisfied with that and have decided to prepare for a Government Job/Bank Job.

Why Banking Only..Not SSC or Any Other Jobs like Railways, UPSC? IBPS Advantage.

Banking is an exciting career option for any individual but is it worth opting being an Engineering graduate, is it worth changing your niche and spending time? The answer is yes, and the points in support are:

  • Large Number of Vacancies Every Year
    A Screen-Cut from a leading newspaper report
Indian Banks Association says banks hired 3 lakh employees in four years - The Times of India
  • Lots of Scope!
According to a study, less than 40% of the total population of India is under the ambit of banking system, as such the scope for growth is huge and one can easily decide to make a career in this field.
  • Reach New Heights!
There’s gonna be a huge requirement of Officers in the Banking Sector in the upcoming years because this surge in recruitment process by the leading PSB’s is a recent one. There was no recruitment notice in this industry for over a decade and this surge is due to the retirements that are gonna take place in the recent years. Here is the another screen cutRetirements will create 1.8 lakh vacancies in public sector banks | Business Line
Candidates can join as a Bank PO and can climb up the stairs really quick through promotions because of these Upper level posts getting vacant. 🙂
  • NOT A BIG TASK FOR ENGINEERING GRADUATES? 😛
This is the most important point as we engineers are always in the fear to appear in any All India Level Exam. Not Because we aren’t capable but due to the habit of laziness that we cultivated throughout the 4years of Engineering. Being an Engineering Guy myself I know most of us are firm believers in ONE NIGHT FIGHTS and this Habit is deep rooted within us.
But if one thinks with an open mind, cracking a Bank PO Exam isnt a tough task because

    1. Syllabus is Well Defined!
“So was our Btech Syllabus”, many will say. But by this i mean that the syllabus is very easy and most of us have      prepared atleast for the placement weeks. Many of us have prepared for the CAT Exam. The Syllabus is quite easy,  and paper is almost same as the placement paper.
    Aptitude(Class 7th, 8th),
    Reasoning(Common Sense),
    English,
    GA
We don’t have to study anything extra. One Can easily crack this exam in 2-3months of preparation. It is isnt like GATE Exam, where you have to have your 4year concepts clear and a preparation of 1year is absolutely necessary to get a good score.
Take a note and remind yourself of the good old times of your school time when EVEN YOU were good in studies and that’s why you were able to grasp an Engineering College Seat. 😛

    2. We have a clear edge over the Commerce Background guys who appear for this exam because they havent touched the Mathematics part in their graduation and we surely can solve any mathematical problem before them.
They have the theoretical knowledge, no need to worry basic of which any one of us can learn in a matter of days (Nobody asks the Quotes from famous economists or Balance sheets preparation in the Exam or During Interview! CHILL!)

  • Understanding the MYTH!
?Record 17 lakh vie for 1,500 SBI posts - Times Of India
Yes this true and can imbibe fear in anyone’s mind who sees it at first glance. But things are not that hard as they appear. All you need is Self Belief and hard work. This year the Cut Off for the IBPS PO Exam was 61(General Category) out off 200 and it isnt a big score. With average preparation, anyone can get this score which suggests that most of the candidates who appear for this exam aren’t that much serious, they lose faith the very attempt they make but continue to appear for successive years, due to some pressure or just to appear busy and make others feel that yes, he is doing something.
Out of around 45000 Candidates who cleared the written exam of IBPS PO Exam last year, more than 28,000 have been allotted a bank and they have started working there. This means a selection ratio greater than 1:2, a ratio even greater than what was there in your college’s recent placement sessions by the respective companies.
Moreover, you will a find strange distinction if you’ll ever reach the venue where interviews for the PO’s are taking place. Around 70% of the Candidates are from Engineering Field, and many MBA’s & MCA’s. So, if they can do surely you can also do it.
  • Salary
    The Pay Scale of a newly appointed PO is Scale I – Rs. 14500 – (600×7) 18700  – (700×2) –  20100  (800×7) –  25700.
This means a Gross Salary of around 30,000 Per month. If we include the total Allowances that a newly appointed PO gets, the Annual CTC Comes out somewhat like this (Data Taken From a reputed website)Salary Bank Probationary Officer Salary ( PO salary)
Annual CTC of Rs 4.81 LPA isnt that bad, is it? Note that the allowance do vary from bank to bank and salary Revision has already become due wef 01/11/2012 for which negotiations are in progress, which means further hike in Salary.
Even If the Banking Unions are able to get 20% increase in the basic, though they are demanding for 30% and with merger of DA, the monthly gross salary of a Bank PO will reach upto Rs.38,000/-.So, all in all the point is salary isnt a big concern for guys to worry. Note, that if you are nerd, good in your engineering stream and placed in a well reputed company paying well then you must make it your first preference and dont get swayed by this salary component. 😛
  • Why Not SSC or UPSC or Anything Else…
Here is the answer, IBPS declares the result within 1month of conducting exam. The recruitment process is fast and transparent as exam is conducted Online
In Case of other exams, like SSC there is always a question of uncertainty, whether the exam properly conducted or not? Also, the process is very slow and it takes almost 1 year for the results to get declared and almost another 1year for candidate to know which department he has got and to join.
Also, The Syllabus is not well defined and is relatively tougher compared to IBPS and no one can prepare wholly for this particular exam and be certain about his/her selection(MY OPINION). It is kind of risky to dedicate your 1year or more than 1year for this. Yes, you can do it but you certainly need a job in Hand for the time being and prepare side by side(Again My VIEW).
